Regulatory and Risk:

In the effort to satisfy the expectations and requirements of their various stakeholders manufacturers have to adhere to many environmental laws originating from federal, state and local agencies. It is imperative that they are familiar with applicable laws for their kind of business and stay abreast of changes as they occur. Trade Associations, industry consultants and attorneys and NGOs are helpful resources.

Compliance is paramount however finding ways to replace toxic substances from a product or production process can eliminate regulatory paperwork and also reduce the risk of accidents which in turn lower insurance costs. It can also simplify training and can even make access to capital easier. Finding ways to lower and remove risks not only appease stakeholders but also lower overall operations costs.

Corporate Responsibility-CSR
Reporting - Transparency

Companies large and small have discovered that by being transparent about their goals to identify and reduce environmentally harmful emissions, effluents, processes and components they can earn the trust and loyalty of their stakeholders. Employees gain satisfaction and pride from knowing that their company is acting responsibly to them and to the environment.

Voluntary participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) not only provides templates for capturing, monitoring and reporting data but it also demonstrates the company's commitment to being transparent in their operations. Also working with NGOs instead of against them helps companies avoid damaging claims against them and ensures integrity.
